Seether’s cover of ‘Seether’ should please both Veruca Salt loyalists and those wanting to hear a different spin on the alt-rock classic

It was destined to happen at some point. South African rock band Seether picked their name as a tribute to the famed 1994 Veruca Salt alternative rock tune of the same name, and now, the band is finally putting its own spin on the song with a new cover of “Seether.”

Seether’s cover of “Seether” stays true to the original, but also mixes in the band’s characteristic offering of grungy guitars and singer Shaun Morgan’s raspy vocals. The song starts out with a catch guitar riff that builds into a full-on pop-rock grunge anthem, with Morgan singing, “Seether is neither loose nor tight. / Seether is neither black nor white.” His trademark harmonies kick in at “I tried to keep her on a short leash / I tried to calm her down,” which makes for a cool sound and effect.

The chorus is strong and anthemic, with thick, lush guitars and the recognizable lyrics, “Can’t fight the Seether!” That energy is a constant throughout the song. All in all, the song should appease both Veruca Salt loyalists and those wanting to hear a different spin on the alternative rock classic.

Seether’s cover of “Seether” will arrive on the band’s upcoming greatest hits collection, titled “Seether 2002-2013.” The 27-song, two-disc career retrospective will reach stores on Oct. 29, and in addition to the cover tune, the collection will feature Seether classics such as “Fine Again,” “Driven Under,” “Fake It,” “Remedy” and more, in addition to three new tracks the band recorded earlier this year.
