Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor Says A Conservative Nature Has Crept into Music

Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails says today’s bands are playing it safe

Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor isn’t happy with the way modern music is going. Speaking with the U.K.’s Daily Record, the singer had some harsh words for today’s bands: “A pretty conservative nature has crept into music and I don’t mean sonically.”

Reznor added, “A lot of bands today are designing themselves to get a good review in the hip blogs and that is probably the…most cowardly thing you can do as an artist.” He thinks music should go against the grain and express the performer’s opinion. “If you have something to say, then say it,” he said. “Express yourself and break the rules.”

While Reznor isn’t pleased with today’s music, he says the answer isn’t to completely avoid it. “Following your own path doesn’t mean being single-minded,” he said. “I try to straddle…paying attention to what is happening in the outside world…and at the same time…really trusting my own voice and my own sense of what is right.”
