Weezer’s album ‘Pinkerton’ is celebrating its 20th anniversary by getting certified platinum

Weezer hit a milestone this month when their seminal sophomore album, “Pinkerton,” turned 20 years old. What’s extra special is that, coincidentally, “Pinkerton” was certified platinum—this is just a few days before that 20th anniversary.

“It’s about time, 8 days shy of 20 years,” Weezer stated on their official Facebook page. The album officially went platinum on Sept. 16.

“Thanks to all 1 million of you in the US and A and the many more #acrossthesea worldwide who bought it and loved it,” the guys added on Facebook.

“Pinkerton” arrived on Sept. 24, 1996, and while it didn’t do as well as Weezer’s self-titled debut album, it’s often considered a cult favorite. With a very different sound from Weezer’s first album – a darker feel – it’s a classic. Additionally, the album’s abrasive and dark lyrics weren’t well received by critics and fans alike. Since then, however, Pinkerton has become a cult favorite, particularly due to its confessional lyrics.

Weezer is racking up the platinum releases, as “Pinkerton” is Weezer’s fourth platinum set. The band’s other platinum successes include 1994’s “Weezer (Blue Album),” 2001’s “Weezer (Green Album)” and 2005’s “Make Believe.”
