A Perfect Circle Guitarist Billy Howerdel: New Solo Single, ‘Poison Flowers,’ Offers Sparse Rock
Listen to the debut solo song from A Perfect Circle guitarist Billy Howerdel, the haunting “Poison Flowers”
A Perfect Circle guitarist Billy Howerdel has released his debut solo single, “Poison Flowers.” The song is the first bit off new music off Howedel’s upcoming full-length solo album.
Those who know Howerdel from his guitar lines in A Perfect Circle will be happy to discover that “Poison Flowers” maintains the aesthetics of that band, with a very melodic, sparse rock sound. The song’s percussion features some cool electronic beats, and Howedel’s slipper guitar lines provide the perfect compliment for his melodic vocals.
“‘Poison Flowers’ began with the bass guitar part and all of the pieces flowed from there,” Howerdel said of the song in a statement. Howerdel produced the track himself, plus sang on it and played all the instruments, except for drums, which were laid down by Josh Freese. “It’s a rare feeling when the process of writing blocks out all distractions. The upcoming songs reflect back to my earliest influences and ‘Poison Flowers’ leads well into the rest of the album.”
In other news, Howerdel recently performed a solo gig during the opening performances for the #Happens Las Vegas conference. His band featured Freese, Danny Lohner (Nine Inch Nails), Kaela Sinclair (M83) and Kevin Maher (Fake Shark).
A Perfect Circle released their latest studio album in 2018, “Eat the Elephant,” which marked the band’s first full-length studio album in 14 years. The band features Howerdel alongside Tool frontman Maynard James Keenan and Smashing Pumpkins’ James Iha.
The upcoming album mark’s Howerdel’s first official solo release, although he has released music with Ashes Divide which, pretty much, counted as solo material. No word yet on an official release date for Howerdel’s solo album, but it’s expected to arrive this summer. Listen to “Poison Flowers” below.
