Art of Dying offer blazing melodic rock on new single

One of Canada’s most delightfully dangerous hard rock acts, Vancouver-based quintet Art of Dying‘s boisterous mix of fervid post-grunge and blazing melodic rock falls first got the attention of the rock contingent with the anthemic “Die Trying,” their debut single off 2011’s, Vices and Virtues. Now, power-laced frontman Jonny Hetherington and the boys return with their follow-up single, “Get Thru This,” showing the group’s optimistic side.

From the onset of the introduction, Hetherington’s vocals break in straightaway, dancing atop gritty, grooving riffs, singing, “I’ve seen better days / So says the mirror / It’s hard to find divinity when you’re the king of men.” From the song’s tight construction to the easy-going nature of the music, “Get Thru This” is catchy without trying too hard to care about radio accessibility.

Of course, the song is absolutely accessible, and the infectious chorus, bringing a crunchy wall of guitars, is primed to tear up the airwaves. “If I can get through this / I can get through anything / If I can make it through this / I can get through anything / I promise you,” utters an impassioned Hetherington.

With a profusion of headache-inducing heavy rock bands crawling out from under every loud music nook and cranny, one can’t help but pray for a break from the norm. Thankfully, bands like Art of Dying yank out all the right hooks and harmonies to give listeners something that rocks hard, but is still sensitive and tuneful enough to make it a pleasant listen. The Howard Benson-produced “Get Thru This” is full of melody and personality, and at under 3 minutes, it’s a neatly-packed tidbit that fits easily beside Disturbed and RED on a rock playlist.
