Soundgarden give fans an inside look at the recording of ‘Live to Rise’

Soundgarden are back with a new single called “Live to Rise,” the band’s first new song in roughly 15 years, and they’re even offering it up as a free download in iTunes now through April 24. Fans are clamoring to get their ears on the new song, and now, Chris Cornell and the guys are taking listeners inside the making of “Live to Rise” via a 42-second behind-the-scenes rehearsal video posted online, offering footage of the grunge gents performing the song and working on it the studio. Watch the full clip, below.

“Live to Rise” will be played during the end credits of the upcoming film “The Avengers” and also appear on the soundtrack for the film. Other artists on the 14-song set include Rise Against, Shinedown, Bush, Evanescence and Five Finger Death Punch. While fans can score Soundgarden’s song early, the full soundtrack will be out on iTunes on May 1. “The Avengers” reaches theaters on May 4.

Soundgarden was approached in early March to contribute a song to “The Avengers.” Band members were already in the process of recording their reunion album, which is expected to arrive this fall, but after going through their current roster of songs, nothing seemed appropriate. So, Cornell and guitarist Kim Thayil started working on a tune from scratch, and “Live to Rise” was born.

“Live to Rise” is the first track Soundgarden wrote specifically for a film. Cornell, of course, has a lengthy resume as a solo artist, and some of his solo tracks have been included on the soundtracks for “Mission Impossible II,” “Casino Royale” and “Machine Gun Preacher.”
