Swedish metal band Ghost cover some of music’s greatest on their new EP, “Phantomime”

Ghost are always full of surprises, and that trend continues with their latest project. The Swedish metal band has announced a new five-song covers EP called “Phantomime,” packed with versions of songs by Genesis, Iron Maiden, Tina Turner, Television and The Stranglers. On Easter Sunday (April 9), the group released its cover of Genesis’ “Jesus He Knows Me,” as a teaser for what’s to come. Listen to the song here and watch the age-restricted official music video here.

On top of Genesis, the covers EP also features frontman Papa Emeritus IV and Ghost covering The Stranglers’ “Hanging Around,” Iron Maiden’s “Phantom of the Opera,” Tina Turner’s “We Don’t Need Another Hero (Thunderdome)” and Television’s “See No Evil.” “Phantomime” is slated to arrive in full on May 18.

This release marks Ghost’s first covers EP. In addition, it follows the band’s 2022 studio album, “Impera,” which featured three chart-topping rock singles in “Hunter’s Moon,” “Call Me Little Sunshine” and “Twenties.”

While Ghost didn’t cover Def Leppard on this EP, they have some history with the band. Last year, the group released a new version of the “Impera” song “Spillways” featuring guest vocals from Def Leppard singer Joe Elliott. You can listen to the song here.

“‘Impera’ was my favorite rock album of 2022,” Elliott said in a press release at the time. “I found out along the way that Tobias is a bit of a fan of DL, so I guess it was inevitable we’d both find out about each other! Once we’d been introduced to the idea of working together it just snowballed organically, and I’m thrilled that I got to sing on what is my favorite song from that album!”

In other news, Ghost are gearing up to hit the road on their upcoming summer North American. The trek, called “Re-Imperatour,” will also offer support from Swedish musical comrades Amon Amarth. Find the group’s upcoming tour dates on their official website.

02. Jesus He Knows Me (Genesis)
