Corey Taylor says working with Dave Grohl is ‘a huge check mark on my bucket list’

Corey Taylor is known for his melodic metal in Stone Sour and neo-shock rock in Slipknot, but now, the famed singer is teaming up with grunge rocker Dave Grohl for something that has little in common with his metal sorties.

Grohl — frontman for grunge band Foo Fighters and former drummer of Nirvana — is putting together a documentary on the legendary studio, Sound City Studios, where Nirvana’s “Nevermind” and so many other great albums originated. Hence, for fans that were wondering just why Taylor and Grohl have been hanging out, that, my friend, is the motive.

Artisan News chatted with Taylor at the Celebrity Rock & Roll Roast at the Grove in Anaheim, Calif., earlier this month and asked him the obvious question, “What was is like working with Dave Grohl?”

“[Dave is] doing a documentary about the legendary board from Sound City that everybody and their mom recorded on — everybody from ‘Nevermind’ to, actually, [Slipknot’s album] ‘Iowa’,” Corey said. “And he’s slowly but surely gotten all these people together to make music on that board again. And he called me. He was like, ‘Would you like to do a tune?’ I was like, ‘Are you serious? I’m on a plane right now,’ you know. And it’s really cool, because it’s me, Dave and Rick Nielsen [Cheap Trick] on one tune. And I’m like, ‘Ahh…. Excuse me?!’ It’s just a huge check mark on my bucket list, let’s put it that way. And I’m really ecstatic. It’s a really good tune.”

The upcoming Sound City Studios documentary is said to have Grohl collaborating with various musicians and recording everything at Sound City. Other performers reportedly taking part include Ratt lead vocalist Stephen Pearcy and lead guitarist Warren DeMartini, REO Speedwagon lead singer Kevin Cronin, Queens of the Stone Age’s Joshe Homme and more. No release date is confirmed yet for the collection, but more details are expected to arrive in the coming weeks.
